Piao Guangxie, born in 1970s, entered his enlightening period of life singing the resonant songs like ‘we are the successors of Communism’. Various cultural situations in Chinese society were changing frequently during his growing up process and made peoples feel overwhelmed; it was just from this point where Piao Guangxie’s floating, rootless experiences of life came from. This psychological sense which was difficult to be described was represented through visual transformation: the choked adults and children under the surface of water are trying to dash out of the water, while the critical point is just the water surface between life and death which could not be touched but could be authentically felt. The world under water makes people feel difficult to open eyes and find one’s way and flustered, it also makes people struggle to death in the hopeless choke. Yet in another corner, the symbolizing architecture signs are quietly standing there as lookers on with cold eyes. The significance to build the environment under water is: to rapidly capture the most sensitive friction point between individual survival experience and social cultural patterns, and to contextualize this contradiction in order to extract and express it.
