Laurent Godin is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition of Vincent Olinet at the gallery.
"When a painter or an engraver introduces some characters in a landscape or close to a building, it isn't for the pleasure of accessory. The characters give a scale, and moreover, they set up the possible points of view that strengthen the real point of view of the observer with essential potentialities." - Michel Tournier
"It's a five meters long and tall caravel, a sculpture of a boat in wood and rope that comes with a stock of food and various products, plates, bowls and rope...
A reality constructed above the other, with its own laws, in autoclave wood to resist water. A ship model that oscillates between two scales, a large-scale model or an improved craft. Floating on both logics, its boltrope is as useful as the food stocks that are stored next to it. The boat seems like an expectation, lit up, while all the crew meets on the deck. The logics of play and imagination as a driving force. A conceivable walk through the sculpture, with stays and platforms. Habitable by a mini crew and a giant captain. Guided and guarded by small sailors. Some carry and employ the others, or vice versa. The ship is a journey itself, a construction experiment, the invention of a personal building. The solitude of the model maker and his naive optimism. Like a domestic boat in the middle of the living-room." - Vincent Olinet
Born in Lyon in 1981, Vincent Olinet experiments and makes his works as objects-toys in transit between the real and the imaginary. Fascinated by the making of the merveilleux, he carves into the real and confer it the excess of a dream. He chooses his subjects for their emotional power, their potential to speak universally, and shapes them to amplify their sculptural nature. His models become two-face figures, protagonist and stage, playing with both an attractive and repulsive perceptions, developing the confusion of truth and falsity.
Vincent Olinet has recently exhibited at the Nuit Blanche 2009, the Parcours de sculptures of FIAC 2009, the Parcours Saint-Germain (2007-2009), Wanderland (Tilburg, The Netherlands, 2008), the Centre Pompidou (2006), and the Mushroom Art Center (New York, 2006).
His upcoming exhibitions include the Moscow Contemporary Art Center, "Space For Fantasy" at the Galerie des Galeries of the Galeries Lafayette, "The Seven Deadly Sins"at the Bern Kunstmuseum, the Darmstadt Kunstmuseum, and "Casanova Forever" at the Frac Languedoc-Roussillon and at the Château de Sigean.
