  A Quarter Century Retrospective:

An Exhibition of the First Oil Painting Research Class of the Central Academy of Fine Arts

In 1982, the Central Academy of Fine Arts introduced a two-year graduate program for oil painting at the suggestion of its director Jiang Feng. The class consisted of two groups: 1) young artists whose formal education had been deprived by the Cultural Revolution but who had won awards at national art exhibitions; 2) teachers at various provincial art academies. Twenty five years have passed since this first class graduated, many of them already have white hairs, and four alumni have already passed away. Most members of the class continued their creative pursuits and became accomplished artists, professors, and leaders of art academies. On March 10, about two dozen alumni—traveling from all over China as well as the U.S., France, Germany, Canada, and Australia—will reunite at the National Art Museum of China and present to the public their works since graduation. They have invited their teachers from the time to comment on and critique their works. The teachers will also be exhibiting some works of their own. Thus he exhibition is entitled “Apprenticeship and Cultivation.”

In 1985, the year after this class graduated, an oil painting conference was held in Huangshan, coinciding with the emergence of the ’85 New Wave, comprising of even younger artists. The mutual learning and encouragement between several generations of artists have developed the field of oil painting, which has had only 100 years of history in China. Today, contemporary Chinese painting has attracted worldwide attention. This exhibition provides a case study of the journey that Chinese oil painting has traveled from resuscitation from the Cultural Revolution to its current splendor.
