C'est sur une moto BMW que Gonzalo Lebrija a traversé la péninsule mexicaine de Basse Californie. Il n'a pas choisi son engin au hasard : ce modèle de la série R75/5 possède un accessoire que l'artiste a utilisé comme instrument de travail. Les deux flancs de réservoir chromés, d'où cette BMW tire son surnom de Toaster (« grille-pain »), ont servi de miroirs réfléchissant les paysages que Lebrija a réinterprétés avec son appareil photo au cours de sa longue randonnée. Soixante-six photographies relatent à la manière d'un carnet de voyage les tribulations de Lebrija de San Diego à Mexico City.
Les oeuvres de Gonzalo Lebrija ont toujours une dimension scénique très marquée. Ses photographies relatent des situations où se mèlent une dose de courage et un certain souffle épique. Sa traversée du désert en solitaire, dormant à la belle étoile, ressemble au scénario d'un film dont le protagoniste tragique entreprend une odyssée virile sur un vague coup de tête, face à la nature et à la quête de lui-même.
La facture sobre et élégante des images de Lebrija dissimule la forte charge affective de son travail. Les compositions concises, à l'équilibre rigoureux, créent une sorte de distance austère, comme si l'artiste était un de ces dandys qui ne s'autorisent aucun sentimentalisme. Pourtant, sous la surface froide, persiste l'affirmation qu'il est encore possible d'accomplir un grand geste de défi individualiste, comme d'autres l'ont fait dans un passé mythique, laissant leurs empreintes au fil du temps. La moto, malgré la parodie du motard-messager, devient ainsi bien plus qu'un moyen de transport : un objet fétiche dont la symbolique induit une identification immédiate avec des personnages réels ou fictifs, tels que Ulysse, le capitaine Achab, Ernest Hemingway, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Peter Fonda, etc.
En captant les images par l'intermédiaire de la surface métallique bombée du flanc de réservoir, Lebrija transforme sa moto en outil de création. L'action représentée convient au rôle que l'artiste s'est assigné, tant il est vrai que les héros n'ont pas coutume de parler d'eux. Tout au mieux accepteront-ils de le faire indirectement, comme ici, par le biais d'une légère déformation du paysage et des reflets ajoutés par le chrome, où le spectateur vigilant discerne la clé de décryptage qui lui permet de pénétrer derrière la belle surface réfractaire des images.
Ces photographies constituent l'aboutissement d'une recherche plastique poursuivie depuis plusieurs années. En 2000, Lebrija avait réalisé une série de prises de vues intitulées Autopaysages, montrant des fragments de la ville reflétés sur les voitures multicolores. Puis, en 2005, répondant à une invitation de l'UNESCO, il a placé une Ferrari à l'intérieur de la chapelle de l'institut culturel Cabañas de Guadalajara (aménagé dans un hospice inscrit sur la liste du patrimoine mondial), puis il a photographié L'Homme de feu, peint au plafond par José Clemente Orozco, qui se reflétait sur la carrosserie rouge italienne, offrant par là une métaphore originale de la puissance et de l'énergie.

En parallèle à « R75/5 Toaster », l'artiste présentera également les premières oeuvres d'une nouvelle série : « La distance entre vous et moi ».
Né à Mexico City en 1972, Gonzalo Lebrija est diplômé de l'Instituto de Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Occidente ITESO de Guadalajara. Il est co-fondateur et directeur de Oficina Para Proyectos de Arte (OPA), un lieu d'exposition alternatif à Guadalajara. Il a récemment participé aux expositions suivantes : Esquiador en el fondo de un pozo, Jumex Collection by Michel Blancsubé, Mexico City, Mexico, Viva Mexico!, Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, Poland, Eco, Mexico at the Centro Reina Sofia, Madrid; Spanish as a Global Language, the Cervantes Institute, New York...

Riding on a BMW motorcycle, Gonzalo Lebrija undertook a journey along the Peninsula Baja California. The choice of the vehicle for this action art is not free: the model in the series R75/5 has an accessory that Lebrija used as a working tool. Indeed, the two chrome plates on the sides of its gas tank - which has given to the vehicle the nickname of toaster - is used by Lebrija as a mirror reflecting the landscapes that he re-treats with a camera along his journey. The result is a collection of 66 photographs that translate, as a chronicle of travel, the vicissitudes of Lebrija through the Bajacaliforniano territory.
The works of Gonzalo Lebrija always have a strong nature of stage performance. His photographs record actions where there are doses of courage and sense of epic. The solitary journey in the desert, camping opencast, evokes the screenplay of a film in which the protagonist is undertaking an adventure, male and tragic, following an impetus and imprecise boost, which is confronted to nature and quest for oneself.
However, the sober and elegantly formal handling of Lebrija conceals the strong emotional charge of his work. The synthetic and severely balanced compositions give to these photographs some sort of unpleasant distance, as if the artist were a dandy who doesn't allow any kind of sentimentality. However, under the cold surface, remains the assertion that it is still possible to undertake actions of defiant individuality like those that once, in a mythical past, humans have done, leaving their footprints over time. In this way, the motorcycle (a kind of parody of the « motorcycle courier ») doesn't become just a means of transport, but also the fetish incarnated by a symbolization that brings us back to the immediate identification to real and fictional characters, like Ulysses, Captain Ajab, Ernest Hemingway, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Peter Fonda, etc.
By capturing images through the metallic and curved surface of the gas tank, Lebrija uses the motorcycle as a medium. The action fits the role that the artist assigned to himself in this story. Indeed, heroes are not accustomed to talk about themselves. At the best, they would do it obliquely, as in this case, through the slight deformation of the landscape made by the board, and the added brightness by the chrome plate, that the alert viewer would interpret as the keys to decrypt out the author's codes and enter the beautiful refractory surface of his pictures.
One the other hand, this project is the culmination of a visual investigation that Lebrija has developed over the past five years. In 2000, he directed a wide range of photographs entitled Autopaisajes, which, as its name suggests, is the reflection of evanescent urban scenes captured on the surface of multicolored automobiles. Then in 2005, invited by the protected UNESCO patrimonial sites program, Lebrija introduced a Ferrari in the chapel of the Instituto Cultural Cabañas, in Guadalajara, to make a snapshot of the mural Hombre de fuego, José Clemente Orozco, projected on the Italian red car's bodywork, providing an original metaphor of energy and power.
In parallel of Toaster R75/5, Gonzalo Lebrija will also present the first pieces of his new work called The distance between you and me.
Lebrija was born in Mexico City in 1972, and received his BFA at the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Occidente ITESO, Guadalajara. He is co-founder and director of Oficina Para Proyectos de Arte (OPA), a non-profit exhibition space in Guadalajara.
