“Anyway the wind blows.”
Social evolution always takes place in the dilemma of economic development and cultural preservation and one of the representatives is Beijing. Regarding as the “Royal City”, Beijing is always historical, which is reflected on many aspects, such as the famous local culture, “Hutong”. The grey eave composed of neat rows was not only sheltering the old Beijingers, but also the native and local culture of the Royal City. When the oil lamp gets bright the families and smoke from kitchen chimneys dances to the sky, the plays Hutong written by years perform in the alley day by day. However all these will -stop be marked a full soon by the bulldozer, and this samsara is repeating alternatively in other form.
Before the big red curtain put down, photography artist, Feng Jianguo, used his well practice of large format technique to document the disappearing this local culture with his calm and objective point of view. In the frames, there are narrow alleys, scattered and torn spring festival couplets, stained bikes…while the locals are in memory, history and front of the frames.
